A Professional Training programme for drama school students
What is Inside Sondheim all about?
The Inside Sondheim programme is designed to work within a professional training environment, aiming to complement and enhance course content within a drama school’s existing curriculum. The intention is to give students a clear vision of how Sondheim is worked upon in the industry. This is not just a “how to be understood” angle but moving down into the roots of why Sondheim’s work impacts so deeply when done properly. It will be challenging and real and its purpose is to teach and in effect model a working path to act and sing musical theatre, with especial emphasis on the lyric driven and musically demanding ethos of Sondheim.
Director Michael Strassen (Best Overall Production for Assassins/5stars The Scotsman for Company) will front the masterclass with a leading Sondheim actor/actress and top musical director.
How will the programme work?
The programme can run for one or two days and is a technical teaching masterclass which does not work to a final performance as such, but simply aims to work through material one-to-one, and as a group, so the participants learn from both doing and watching.
It will begin with the students each working on a Sondheim song and being directed. This may include undoing bad habits, centering of where emotion stems from and why, and technical applications such as breathing and diction. This will be covered in the morning session.
Following this, sections on choral learning or learning a section from a Sondheim show (Sunday from Sunday in the Park with George for example) and a Q and A.
How much does it cost?
The cost to Drama Schools is £800 per day – this is an all-inclusive cost, with nothing extra to pay.
A two day booking of the course at £1600 would include, on day two, a day of how to audition, ending in an afternoon mock up of an auditioning board and feedback to aid the students. A casting director who has not been privy to any of the teaching would also be asked to make comments based on what was seen, to provide as accurate a representation of what might actually happen in the industry as possible.
