If you missed Imelda Staunton’s award-winning performance as Momma Rose in Gypsy at Chichester or the Savoy (and if you did, you have our sympathy – she was incredible!) then you’ve got another chance this evening, courtesy of BBC4. Tonight at 9pm, BBC4 is screening the entire production, as filmed at the Savoy just prior to the departure of Lara Pulver (Louise/Gypsy) on 10 October.
Staunton’s portrayal of the ultimate showbiz mother was one of the must-sees of 2015, and indeed she’s been hailed by many as the best Momma Rose ever seen on stage. The Stephen Sondheim Society’s US correspondent Daria Begley wrote in Sondheim The Magazine that of the other Mommas she’d seen – Bernadette Peters, Patti Lupone, Tyne Daly and Staunton – the petite English powerhouse was by far the best. And Michael Billington, writing in The Guardian, said that Staunton’s was “one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen in musical theatre”.
Gypsy is directed by Jonathan Kent and has a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Choreography is by Stephen Mear, designs by Anthony Ward, and musical direction and orchestration by Nicholas Skilbeck.
