The Tooting Arts Club will present a site specific production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s 1979 musical Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at London’s oldest pie and mash shop, Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop, Tooting south London, from 21st October to 29th November 2014.
In this staging of Sondheim’s musical thriller, audiences will congregate at Anton’s barber shop before being shown through to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop, where the décor, little changed since it was opened in 1908, will provide the setting for Mrs Lovett’s infamous establishment.
The production will be directed by Bill Buckhurst with musical direction by Ben Cox. It is produced by Rachel Edwards for Tooting Arts Club. Tooting Arts Club was established in 2010 to stage high quality professional productions in an area that lacks a permanent home for theatre. The company takes inspiration from the area, using local buildings to stage performances that draw audiences from across London. This will mark their fifth production.
In a press statement, Director Bill Buckhurst said of the production: “This will be Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd stripped-back and up-close with a cast of eight, a band of three and a uniquely atmospheric space – the perfect setting for this thrilling tale of love, betrayal, lust and murder.”

A bit about our pricing …
As there is very limited availability each night, (Harrington’s only seats 32 folk!) we appreciate that our prices may be somewhat higher than you may have previously experienced. But in order to feed the band and our hardworking performers we really had little choice other than to make some changes, we do hope you understand, and hopefully you will be able to find something there that suits your budget …
There are three types of tickets available during the run:
Dress rehearsal tickets: £5
Preview tickets: £13/£16 (£11/£14 on the door)
All other tickets : £20 + £2 booking fee (£20 on the door)
We recommend 14+ …. but we will leave that to you …
Pie and Mash if you dare…?
Now this evening would not be complete with out the optional pre-show pie and mash for and extra fiver! When you are directed to our box office you will see that you can buy your pre-show dinner online. You will have to be there an hour before curtain-up at 6.30pm to enjoy a little bit of priest … er, sorry, lamb pie, and mash with optional liquor!
On arrival and what to expect …
Well we need to know you are in the building, so please come to the kitchen at the back of the shop anytime from 6.30 to let us know. The venue does not have a bar, but worry not, Anton’s Barber’s across the street has one – gin-slings all round I hear you cry! Anton’s also has a toilet – in fact it has two, which is just as well as Harrington’s doesn’t have one … so for the sake of your own bladders try to remember this.
Refunds and exchanges…
Sincere apologies but we cannot issue refunds or exchange your tickets for another night, availability is so limited, it would be very difficult to make work. If you let us know you can’t attend, we can attempt to re-sell your ticket(s) and refund you that way – but there are no guarantees that your ticket will be sold.
Okay get booking! Telephone booking will become available the week commencing the 15th of September, at the moment Ticket Source online is you best (and only) option.
