National Concert Hall – Dublin
RTÉ Concert Orchestra
John Wilson, conductor
A terrific line-up of soloists joins the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and its Principal Conductor John Wilson for this salute to Stephen Sondheim in his 85th year. Kim Criswell, Ben Davis, Damian Humbley and Jenna Russell celebrate this master, the creator of countless startling, honest, dazzling, witty, heartbreaking songs.
In an exciting world first, the concert will feature two numbers from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum being played in their original orchestrations by Irwin Kostal and Sid Ramin for the first time since the first Broadway run in 1962-4. The orchestrations for ‘Love, I Hear’ and ‘Free’ were presumed lost but the original manuscripts were in an archive at Columbia University and John Wilson has prepared new performing materials from them.
The singers have serious credentials to take on this Sondheim repertoire. Kim Criswell is , as the Telegraph says, ‘magnificent’: ‘She is the business . . . a fabulous voice and a personality to match’. She won the Helen Hayes Award for her performance in Side By Side By Sondheim in Washington and musicaltheatrereview.com hailed her ‘electrifying perfection’ in Sondheim: Inside Out at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.
Ben Davis is a ‘great-sounding baritone’ (Huffington Post) whose credits include Trevor Nunn’s A Little Night Music on Broadway, Kenneth Branagh’s film of The Magic Flute and Mike Nichols’ tour of Spamalot. His ‘rich, fervent’ voice was declared by Variety to be one of the glories of Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème.
Damian Humbley and Jenna Russell appeared in Maria Friedman’s multi-award-winning production of Merrily We Roll Along. Jenna Russell is one of the go-to Sondheim performers in London and has worked closely with the composer himself. Her pedigree goes back to Young Sally in Follies in 1988, and as well as the Merrily We Roll Along success includes an Olivier Award in 2007 for Dot/Marie in Sunday in the Park with George (reprising her roles on Broadway in a Tony-nominated performance) and two Into the Woods appearances.
