This year’s third place winner at The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition, Oscar Conlon-Morrey, will be singing at the Phoenix Artist Club this coming Monday as part of The Stephen Sondheim Society Presents… cabaret night with Tim McArthur and Aaron Clingham. Oscar took the unprecedented third place prize after judges were unable to agree on the runner-up at this year’s event. In order to celebrate the top three students, Society patron Julia McKenzie generously donated the £250 third prize.
Part of the SSSSPOTY prize – in addition to the cash prizes of £1,000, £500 and this year £250 – the winners are invited to sing at a Society cabaret. Oscar is first up, and it’s hoped that we might hear a reprise of his winning number, “The Contest”, as sang by Adolfo Pirelli the “Italian” barber who challenges Sweeney Todd to a shave-off. Everyone was in agreement that this is a role that Oscar was born to play, and we’re sure we’ll see him perform as Pirelli one day soon.
Oscar will be sharing the stage with fellow newcomer Maddy Banks and the star of Anyone Can Whistle Rachel Delooze, who took on the lead role of Nurse Fay Apple at the recent UK production at London’s The Union Theatre. As ever, the indomitable Tim will host and Aaron will be at the piano. Please come along and support these young artists – tickets for members are just £12 using the discount code in your email (check your inbox!), or £15 to non-members. The Phoenix Artist Club is a lovely Soho institution that no theatre fan should miss, so if you’ve not yet paid a visit, please do so this coming Monday 3rd July.
