Save the date! Sunday 15th May 2016 is now confirmed for the Finals of The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition and the Stiles + Drewe Prize. This annual event is the jewel in our crown, and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the competition.
As ever, we’re partnering with Mercury Musical Developments and George Stiles and Anthony Drewe to bring you both a selection of the year’s best students from UK musical theatre colleges/courses, and 12 new songs from shows currently being development by MMD’s pool of writers and composers.
Edward Seckerson is once again chairing the jury, and we welcome Mark Warman to the team as this year’s Musical Director. Edward and Mark have already selected their 12 finalists from 80 students – a record for the Society heats, and no easy task – so you can be sure of an excellent afternoon of entertainment. Each student will sing a Sondheim song of their choice, plus one new song from the MMD shortlist. On offer is a £1,000 prize for the best student, £250 for the runner up and £1,000 for the best new song. This year, to celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary, Stiles + Drewe are also introducing a new mentorship award scheme, and the winner of this year-long bespoke workshop will be announced at the Finals.
The competition will be held in the Novello Theatre in London (*tbc), where Mamma Mia is currently playing. Doors open at 2.30 pm for a 3 pm start. Tickets will be on sale shortly – check back regularly for updates on host, judges and special guests.
